Butterfly Kit:Watch your butterflies metamorphose through their various stages from egg, to caterpillar, to pupae, and finally butterfly. You will be amazed by these tiny transforming insects. The Cabbage white butterflys life is full of changes from the start to the end. The cycle starts when the adult female butterflies lay their eggs on cabbage plants. The eggs are oval-shaped and the size of each egg is approximately 1mm. The caterpillar eats leaves constantly and grows quickly. The caterpillar finds a safe place to rest. With a silk thread that comes out of a hole just below its mouth (spinneret), the caterpillar spins a silk pad around the body. After approximately 12 hours the body of the larvae changes into the pupae. Within the pupal stage, the metamorphosis of the butterfly takes place. When the butterfly first emerges from the chrysalis, its wings are soft and crumpled. The butterfly rests, and then slowly unfolds its wings to dry. After a few hours, the butterfly will be ready to fly. Ladybird Kit:Ladybirds, having 6 legs, are classified as insects. They belong to the order of Coleoptera and the family of Coccinellidae. Like all other coleoptera, their front wings (elytra) are rather rigid and form a shell that protects the membranous wings that enable them to fly. In a single species, the patterns can be very different, especially the Adalia bipunctata (2 spotted) ladybird, which can be red with black spots or black with red spots. And, contrary to what you may have thought, the number of spots does not correspond to the insect's age. Stick Insect Kit:There are more than 2000 species of stick insect. The Carausius morosus variety is commonly known as the Indian or Laboratory Stick Insects. These are amongst the easiest to look after. They are commonly called stick insects because they closely resemble a stick, this is no coincidence, it is part of their survival strategy to blend in with the scenery so as to fool their predators that they are not really a live insect at all. The neatest thing about this species is that when it is held it will often fold all of its legs in, and become a complete stick. Carausius morosus is the most recognized species of phasmid in the world.
