This is the BMW Z9: a pure concept vehicle in that BMW will probably never put it into production but are using it as a test platform and showcase for technology that will eventually filter through into future production models.
In this case, the technology in question is something called BMW iDrive. A central control unit mounted on the transmission tunnel where you would expect to find a gearstick or auto shift lever in a normal car. This controller allows the driver to access all the main functions of the vehicle such as the on-board computer, climate control, entertainment systems and driver configurations. The driver can access all these functions and more by simply moving the controller up, down, left, right and diagonally like a small joystick.
All the necessary information is displayed on the dashboard on a centrally-positioned colour Control Display which will tell the driver exactly what they want to know at a quick glance.
The steering wheel incorporates six speed Steptronic technology whic allows the driver to shift gears as in Formula 1.
