Dr. Lyle Skains is a Lecturer in Creative Writing and Digital Media in the School of Creative Studies and Media at Bangor University. She is a published fiction author-turned-researcher, specialising in practice-based research in creative writing, digital media, and alternative publishing. Her PhD project examined how composing digital fiction affects the writer and the narrative; this practice-based approach resulted in a digital novella that can be found on her site, as well as several papers for Convergence, Qualitative inquiry, Digital Creativity, and the electronic book review.

Lyle’s current projects include a practice-based approach to writing digital fiction for dedicated e-readers; the AHRC-funded Reading Digital Fiction project; and evaluation of funding models and publishing platforms for multimedia academic texts and digital fiction. She also leads workshops for writers, publishers, and academics on digital writing and publishing, and has led workshops for teens to write digital fictions as interventions for body image issues. She is a member of the Electronic Literature Organization.

Lyle’s teaching centers on transmedia storytelling, how writers approach narrative from various perspectives and media, the role of genre fiction in culture, playable fiction and literary games, and 21st century writing and publishing. She coordinates the BA in Creative & Professional Writing, and the MArts and MRes in Professional Writing at Bangor University, where she is a Teaching Fellow.
