Christian M. Laurent is Tizard Scholarship PhD researcher sitting at the University of Southampton and and the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton. His cross-campus, multidisciplinary research focuses on the intriguing mechanical properties of bird feathers and how they evolved. At the interface between Biology and Engineering, Christian looks at the structure and development of feathers from Nano and molecular scales to whole-tissue level experiments.
At the beginning he studied for a B.Sc. in Marine Biology with Oceanography, also at Southampton, before he went on to receive a MRes with distinction after publishing in a high-impact journal, which would later pave the way for him to continue the research at doctoral level.
For now, he has two intellectual homes; split between the Aerodynamics and Flight Mechanics research group and the Vertebrate Palaeontology research group. In the future he hopes not only to look backwards deep into the fossil records but also to apply his findings in a number of different contemporary engineering solutions. He is one early-career stage researcher to watch!
